Philodendron Growing Tips & Care

Houseplant - The philodendron (Philodendron) is a large genus of about 600 species in the flowering plant family (Araceae). It originated in tropical America and is native to tropical Africa, southern Asia, the Indo-Chinese and Pacific Islands, Australia, and Melanesia. The genus is distributed from sea level to 2,500 m (8,200 ft), with several species endemic to highland areas, and is cultivated worldwide.

The genus is named after the Greek words philos, meaning "loving," and dendron, meaning "tree". The genus is of special economic importance, and is cultivated for the houseplant trade, where its species and its hybrids are popular.

The philodendron is also a popular houseplant in temperate climates, where it survives in part or almost entirely as an indoor plant. Members of the genus are valued for their attractive foliage and tolerance of neglect. Philodendrons range in size from 5 to 160 cm (2.0 to 62 in) in height, and from 1 to 70 cm (0.4 to 27 in) in width.

The leaves of philodendrons are heart-shaped, with a smooth edge, and may be glossy, dull, or fuzzy, depending on the species. The leaves are green to red, with lighter undersides. The flowers are produced in terminal panicles, which may be several meters long,
